Chocolate, chocolate everywhere!

Easter is nearly upon us so we thought we would share a few quirky words of wisdom about our favorite foodstuff... chocolate! \"Chocolate is nature’s way of making up for Mondays\" \"There’s more to life than chocolate, but not right now\" \"Exercise is a dirty word... Every time I hear it, I wash my mouth out with chocolate.\" So enjoy and remember, eat, drink and be merry, tomorrow we may diet! Have a good one!

Sweetly Judging Choco Challenge

The Hive CS have been invited to judge a Dragons Den style competition involving Reedness Primary School pupils, as part of a marketing project run by the Education Business Partnership (EBP).

Six teams were given a brief involving the design and marketing of production of chocolates and the box, to enable the pupils to grasp the fundementals of real life business skills.

The Hive were invited to provide experience and advice for the candidates to enable them to input their own ideas into the project.

Topics covered were; box construction, flavours, styles, marketing, business ethics, law, and profit margins.

The winning team were the Magic Chocolate Company, comprising of Ben Backhouse (9), Daniel Allen (9) and Luke Bolton aged (10) .

Overall the quality of competitors was very high, with the winning team designing a tricky triangle shaped box.

Angela Martin The Hive Creative Director said " We have been amazed at the high standard of work the children have achieved at such a young age and in such a short space of time. The children have designed all types of boxes. It is important that businesses engage with children, to show them the different types of jobs they can do".

We wish all the pupils the very best of luck in the future and look forward to working alongside the EBP again in the near future.

Did you know...?

  • A hive is more than just a buzz of activity. The social organization rivals that in the best-run corporations, with each bee and each cell possessing a rigidly specific function.
  • In the course of their lifetime, a worker bee will produce 1/12th of a teaspoon of honey. To make one
pound of honey, workers in a hive fly 55,000 miles and tap two million flowers.
  • In a single collecting trip, a worker will visit between 50 and 100 flowers, returning to the hive carrying over half her weight in pollen and nectar. A productive hive can make and store up to two pounds of honey a day.
  • Thirty-five pounds of honey provides enough energy for a small colony to survive the winter. Theoretically, the energy in one ounce of honey would provide one bee with enough energy to fly around the world.
  • Bees possess five eyes. The three ocelli are simple eyes that discern light intensity, while each of the two large compound eyes contains about 6,900 facets and is well suited for detecting movement. In fact, honeybees can perceive movements that are separated by 1/300th of a second. Humans can only sense movements separated by 1/50th of a second. Were a bee to enter a cinema, it would be able to differentiate each individual movie frame being projected.

Sustainability - Another leap forward

A recent Hive project replaced styrofoam cups used on a national manufacturing site with ceramic mugs,
and has subsequently cut landfill by 2 tonnes per month! An amazing feat and very easily achieved.

The project has been both hugely cost saving and an environmentally sound alternative to landfill! Well done!

Recycling - Did you know...

  • Making recycled paper instead of new paper uses 64 percent less energy and uses 58 percent less water.
  • One tree can filter up to 60 pounds of pollutants from the air each year.
  • More than 1/3 of all fiber used to make paper comes from recycled paper.
  • Only 1 percent of the whole world water supply is usable; 97 percent is in the ocean and 2 percent is frozen.
  • Each ton of recycled paper can save 17 trees, 380 gallons of oil, three cubic yards of landfill space,
4,000 kilowatts of energy and 7,000 gallons of water!
